最近團裡練唱的歌曲當中有一首叫「夜晚的星」特別吸引了我的注意力。原作曲者是舒曼，中文譯詞者是勞象方（恕我無見識不知此人是何方鴻博碩學），譯詞團友大都會背了，不過我還是引述：
遙遠的朋友，快樂又溫柔，從天上帶來了夜晚的問候。
無論在何方，伴隨我身旁，是你親切溫和金色的光芒。
幽幽心切切，偏偏情依依，夜晚星星閃爍遙望我故鄉。
乍看乍聽之下覺得歌曲歌詞似乎都相當優美，然而細讀歌詞，不免有些疑惑。到底這首歌要訴說的是何種情懷？是思鄉曲嗎？是想念遙遠的朋友嗎？第一段的主題真的有那麼重要以致於舒曼在作曲時必須將這個主題反覆一次嗎？「幽幽心切切，偏偏情依依」實在是太優美的中文了，那原文原詞到底又說了些什麼呢？夜晚星星閃爍是繁星點點的夜空嗎？
既然是譯詞，倒讓我覺得好奇，想知道原詞到底如何。看到原作詞者是「法列爾斯列賓」，稍微思考篩選了一下，心想應該是August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798-1874)吧！如果是他的話，那不就是寫德國國歌的詩人嗎？附上照片讓大家看看他的模樣吧！
經過一番查證，果然找到了德文的原詞，研讀之後，覺得中文譯詞和德文原詞之間還真有些差距呢！這首歌屬於西洋浪漫時期的音樂作品，原來是舒曼編號第79號為年輕人所編寫的32首歌曲集中的第一首，出版於1849年。(Liederalbum für die Jugend, op. 79 (April 1849)).標題和原詞如下（為方便不諳德文者對照閱讀，勉強將僅粗略譯出原文本意的中文翻譯並列，較深邃的涵義詳見下文）：

夜晚的星 – 金星 –愛的星辰

原詞有四段，中文譯詞卻只有三段，對照之下，似乎一二段併成一段了，第三第四段看似翻譯，其實幾乎是參照閱讀原詞之後，隨興自由發揮，按音律填詞。
標題Abendstern譯成「夜晚的星」看似無可厚非，其實對德文的原意瞭解並不夠深入，因為德文名詞單複數標示比中文清楚，這裡用的是單數Stern而不是複數Sterne，而且在此也並非用單數形來代表多數，所以指的是一顆特定的星星，而德文所謂的Abendstern（夜星）和Morgenstern（晨星）雖然是以看到這顆星星的時間是在夜晚或清晨來命名區隔，但是在天文學上指的都是同一顆星星，也就是Venus（金星），而金星就是維納斯，也就是代表愛情的星座。瞭解標題本意和歌曲風格的歷史背景後，對歌曲內容的詮釋才更能正確掌握。以下分段說明每段歌詞要旨：
第一段第一句Du lieblicher Stern「你─可愛的星星」，並不是一個完整的句子，只是一個第二人稱單數親密式的代名詞和進一步描述他的同位格名詞並列在一起，表面上看起來好像在說你是一顆可愛的星星，其實真正的意思是你就是代表愛的星辰，其實德文若要說「愛的星辰」最正確的說法應該是用複合詞Liebesstern，然而這裡考慮到詩詞音節數的關係而使用了一種較間接的說法。而且這裡的Du文法上看似主格，然而很多現代印歐語系的語言在構詞上都已經不再像拉丁文一樣清楚地區分主格(nominativus)和呼格(vocativus)，所謂呼格就是呼喚時所用的詞形，這裡的Du雖然構詞上並無明確標示，然而在語用上卻是清楚的呼格，而中文在呼喚對方時可以呼喚對方的名字如：「怡君！」、「玉堂！」或以自己和對方的關係來呼喚，如：「妹妹！」、「哥哥！」，但是中文的第二人稱代名詞「你」卻不直接用來呼喚對方，尤其是想和對方建立親密關係時。所以第一段的第一個字直接翻譯成「你」和原文就已經有差距了。Du leuchtest so fern是說「你輝映得如此遙遠」，Doch hab' ich dich dennoch von Herzen so gern，「然而我卻依舊從心裏如此喜愛你」。這一句中連續用了doch和dennoch都是表示和預期或自然狀況相違反的，.這也是第一段歌詞涵義中需要深入揣摩的地方，字面上雖然完全沒說，但是用了「然而、依舊」之後，就清楚地表示由代表愛的星辰維納斯所散發出來依稀的星輝無遠弗屆地穿透了千萬里遙遠的夜空，雖然只剩得微弱不起眼的一絲亮光，然而依舊激起我滿心的愛憐。
第二段其實只有兩句: Wie lieb' ich doch dich so herzinniglich!「我就是打從內心深處這麼喜愛著你」，Dein funkelndes Äuglein blickt immer auf
看了德文原詞才知道舒曼為何要用反覆記號，因為原文歌詞兩段是不一樣的。四段歌詞如果用連篇譜曲(durchkomponieren)的手法稍嫌冗長，用反覆記號則樂曲變成AABC的格式也較簡潔。翻譯者需有極大的膽識才能將以上兩段德文歌詞的原意譯成中文「遙遠的朋友，快樂又溫柔，從天上帶來了夜晚的問候。」若從中文的歌詞回推音樂的詮釋，容易讓人對舒曼作曲時的考量產生誤會。
第三段承接第二段，第一句 ”So blick' ich nach dir, sei's dort oder hier“ 直譯是：「因此（每當）我望著你，不論是在那裡或這裡」，Dein freundliches Äuglein steht immer vor mir.「你友善的小眼睛一直都在我前面」。這一段中文的翻譯「無論在何方，伴隨我身旁，是你親切溫和金色的光芒。」在所有四個段落中算是最接近原意的。本段第一個字so看似贅字，其實卻是在語意上承先啟後最關鍵性的一個字。So可以同時解釋成「因此、所以」以闡明因果關係，也可以解釋成「如此這般」以用來描述情狀。在這裡解釋成因果關係是承先，而解釋成描述情狀則是啟後。前面第二段提到金星維納斯一直都在看著我，這一段將主詞反轉，從被動轉為主動，維納斯和我彼此之間互動性更強，情意交流更是來回不斷。而我之所以不論身處何地，都情不自禁仰望你的原因，就是基於第一段和第二段所娓娓道來的種種情愫，而每當我仰望傾慕你時，你總是在觸目可及之處，不離不棄，對我回報以和藹親切的眼神，百般關照，為我指引前導。
最後一段兩句： Wie nickst du mir zu in fröhlicher Ruh'! 「你對我點頭（表情）既欣喜又安詳」，O liebliches Sternlein, O wär ich wie du!「喔愛的小星星，喔願我能像你」。這最後一段是涵意最深總結一切的一段。中文的譯詞語意有些曖昧，「幽幽心切切，偏偏情依依，夜晚星星閃爍遙望我故鄉。」是思念故鄉、親友、愛人似乎都有遐想的空間。然而德文原詞應該很清楚是一首情歌，相距雖然遙遠，但是含情脈脈，眉目傳情、晗首示意，款款深情中蘊含無限的愉悅和安詳。最後一句「願我能像你」，到底像你的什麼呢？讓聽者唱者又從頭細細品味到底維納斯縷縷不斷的情愫，如何無遠弗屆穿透遙遠夜空重重的阻隔，以何等細膩的風格傳遞何種親切安詳的情意？而我又以何種浪漫情懷，體會維納斯的款款深情和對他如何的仰慕依戀。
Fallersleben原詞的音節數每一段都是
國人一向以為拉丁民族比較浪漫，而對德語系民族卻有嚴峻冷酷的刻板印象，大概是因為在早期的文化接觸不夠全面，侷限於軍事、科學、哲學的衝擊而造成了先入為主的偏差印象。殊不知歐洲18世紀浪漫主義的興起和德國大有淵源，更可以回溯到Kant, Schlegel, Herder, Goethe, Schiller, Novalis等思想家、人文學者和遊記作家。基本上浪漫主義就是以不同的眼光重新審視周邊熟悉的事物，而賦予新的情懷詮釋。從這首歌的德文原詞，細細品味，應該不難體會。
翻譯界有一種說法：「翻譯作品就像女人：漂亮的不忠實，忠實的不漂亮。」我們不需要為這種比喻的恰當與否捲入無謂的紛爭。越好的作品翻譯難度越高，歌詞若要翻譯得面面俱到往往具備相當的難度。歌唱家和演唱團體到底決定演唱原文或尋求優良的翻譯歌詞，兩者在取捨之間都會有後續待解決的問題，只是對我而言，這首歌唱中文和德文原文的情懷感覺很不一樣，幾乎是兩首意境完全不同的歌曲。隨著歌詞的不同，應該音樂詮釋也會自然有所差別。目前我並沒有翻譯這首歌的衝動，只想把原歌詞的情懷和意境寫出來和大家分享。野人獻曝，希望大家不要嫌我咬文嚼字。
